MBG-2024-09-0248
On September 11th, 2024 at approximately 8:26 am, the police department was dispatched to the intersection of Shepherdstown Road and East Simpson Street for a two vehicle crash. Investigation determined a school bus was traveling northbound on Shepherdstown Road and had stopped at the red traffic signal at East Simpson Street. The school bus was intending on turning right, and due to having to make a wide turn because of its length, the operator positioned the bus in the left portion of the lane. The gray Hyundai, operated by Barry Lutz, passed the school bus on the right shoulder, ignoring the buses turn signal. The bus driver did not see Lutz passing in their blind spot and began making the turn, striking Lutz’s vehicle in the process. Lutz vehicle was towed from the scene as a result of the damage it sustained. Lutz’s vehicle made contact with the front wheel of the bus and the bus sustained minimal damage. No students were on board the bus at the time of the crash.
Though this section of roadway is wide enough for two vehicles, it is not divided into two lanes. Drivers passing a vehicle on the right must pass with care and safety, and only when the vehicle they are passing is making a left turn.
