MBG-2021-06-0659

On June 24th, 2021, at approximately 3:12 pm, the victim contacted the police department about being contacted and advised their Facebook account was hacked. The victim, who resides in the 100 block of East Marble Street, stated they received the contact through Facebook. They looked up a phone number for Facebook through Google. The number they located put them in contact with someone who told the victim pornography was being uploaded to their Facebook account. The victim was told to purchase eBay gift cards and they could rectify the issue. The victim purchased (3) $50 eBay gift cards and provided the activation numbers to the individual. The victim was told to call another telephone number to verify the issue was resolved. Upon calling the second number, the victim was told to purchase (6) more eBay gift cards, this time at $100 increments. It was after giving the activation numbers for these cards, the victim realized it was a scam. Individuals are reminded if you are asked to provide gift card activation numbers over the phone for any type of service it is most likely a scam. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the police department.
