Theft by Deception

On December 4th, 2021, at approximately 6:47 pm, a victim contacted the police department after falling victim to a scam. The victim, who resides in the 500 block of West Main Street, had an item for sale on Facebook Marketplace. The victim was contacted by someone advising they wished to purchase the item. They agreed to a transaction price of $950 and payment was to be sent through PayPal. The victim advised the item was taken to the post office to be sent to the “buyer.” The victim was advised there was an issue with the payment and the victim was told they needed to purchase $950 in gift cards to rectify the purchasing issue. The victim did so and provided the gift card information to the “buyer.” It was learned the “buyer” was not legit. The victim was told to contact the post office to attempt to stop the item from being sent. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the police department.
