On February 15th, 2022, at approximately 9:43 am, the police department was contacted by a victim who resides in the 1100 block of East Coover Street. The victim advised they received a phone call from an individual claiming to be with the Amazon fraud department. The individual advised the victim a $900 fraud charge had been discovered on their Amazon account. The individual advised they wanted to assist the victim in “taking care of” the fraudulent charges. The victim allowed remote access to their computer. The victim was advised they needed to purchase gift cards over the internet to assist with reversing the charges. The victim realized after being on the phone with the individual for an extended period of time they were being scammed. They ended the phone call and upon checking their banking account, they found money had been transferred out of both their savings and checking accounts. The victim is currently out $3000, between the amount of gift cards purchased and the money taken from their account. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the police department.
