On October 30th, 2023, at approximately 10:24 am, the police department was contacted by the victim regarding a scam. The victim reported they had began messaging an unknown person on TikTok over one month prior. The victim and the unknown suspect became friends over the course of their conversations. The suspect led the victim to believe they wanted to move to Mechanicsburg to be closer to them, and requested money for assistance with moving. The suspect sent the victim checks which arrived printed with the victims name and address, but from a bank the victim did not have an account with. The victim was instructed to deposit the checks into their account, and then send the money to the suspect. In total, the victim sent over $9,900 to the suspect before learning the checks sent to them were not legitimate and the bank account on the checks did not exist.
