On March 20th, 2023, at approximately 4:58 pm, the victim contacted the police department regarding a scam. The victim, who resides in 400 block of West Main Street, advised they were attempting to make a purchase at a store with an Amazon gift card. The victim had issues using the gift card. They searched the internet for Amazon support and used a number provided by a website. They began speaking with an individual who answered the phone. They identified themselves as an employee of Amazon. The person they were speaking with advised the victim to allow them access to their phone using an application AnyDesk. The victim downloaded the application which allowed the person they were speaking with access to their phone. The victim was asked to log into their bank account, but they decided to end the call. The victim received a call back from a blocked number and it was the same individual trying to convince the victim to log into their bank account for assistance with the gift card. The victim again ended the call. The victim was not out any money, but wanted the police department to be aware. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the police department.
