On September 17th, 2021, at approximately 12:32 pm, the victim contacted the police department regarding a virus which they got on their computer. The victim, who resides in the 100 block of East Coover Street, advised they were on their computer when a message popped up on their computer screen stating their computer was infected by a virus. The victim tried shutting off their computer and restarting it multiple times, but the message did not go away. There was a number the victim was directed to call and they did so. The victim called the number and spoke with two different individuals stating the victim’s computer had been hacked. The victim was directed to purchase gift cards in $500 increments and they would repair the victim’s computer. The victim purchased 19 such gift cards prior to realizing this was a scam. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the police department.
